Valerie Crites Fowler, Deputy Chief of Mission to Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka and Republic of Maldives

 Valerie Crites Fowler
Ms. Fowler joined the Foreign Service in 1989.  She is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, rank of Officer-Counselor.

Prior to this assignment, Ms. Fowler served as Counselor, Provincial Reconstruction Team and Sub-National Governance Office at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul from 2008-2009.  From 2005-2008, she served as the Public Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.

Ms. Fowler has served as the Assistant Information Officer in Hong Kong (1990-1991) and Beijing (1991-1992); Public Affairs Officer in Shanghai (1992-1993) and Shenyang (1993-1994), China; Public Affairs Officer in Thessaloniki, Greece (1995-1997); Desk Officer for Turkey, Greece, Italy (1997-1999); and Information Officer in Pretoria, South Africa (1999-2001).  She has also served in the Department of State’s Operations Center as a Senior Watch Officer (2001-2002) and as Director of Crisis Management (2002-2004).

Ms. Fowler received an A.B. in International Relations from Stanford University and an M.S. in National Security Studies from the National War College.  She is married to Chip Fowler, and they have two sons.
