Government allocated $10 million to work with the Maldives on post tsunami reconstruction. Historically, the Maldives depends on rainwater harvesting for water supply supplemented with groundwater during the dry season. The tsunami inundated fresh water storage facilities and wells with seawater and contaminated groundwater with sewage. (More)

November 9, 2007: The U.S. Embassy to Maldives and Sri Lanka celebrated the second U.S. – Maldives Friendship Week in Male’ from November 4-6, 2007 with invaluable cooperation and participation from numerous Maldivian agencies and individuals.
For three days American staff of the U.S. Embassy to Maldives and Sri Lanka, based in Colombo, decamped to Male’ for a series of cultural and educational events to recognize Maldives and the United States’ positive ongoing relations.
Highly-attended public and private events were held throughout the city and received wide media coverage in print, television and radio outlets.

Popular public events included a film screening of the award-winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”, a U.S. Visa and Education Open House, presentations on Intellectual Property Rights and U.S. Investment, and especially, the final night hip hop and Broadway dance show “Rhythm Nation.”
Ambassador Robert O. Blake hosted two lively panel discussions on Democracy and the Environment and a roundtable discussion with local journalists. The Ambassador and other U.S. Embassy Officers, as well as, U.S. performers “American Voices” appeared on both Maldivian radio and television throughout the week.

In addition the U.S. Embassy sponsored workshops on English Language Teaching, Librarianship and Hip Hop Dance throughout the week. Private events included book donations to Male’ schools and the American Corner at the National Library, a plaque unveiling ceremony commemorating restoration funded by the U.S. Embassy at the Eid Mosque, an inaugural luncheon for the Maldives Fulbright Alumni Association and a reception hosted by both Maldivian and American officials.
Throughout the week officials from the U.S. Embassy had the opportunity to meet with hundreds of Maldivians to learn, share ideas and reaffirm our valuable bilateral relations. The Embassy looks forward to holding U.S. – Maldives Friendship Week as a yearly event in future.

Ambassador Blake Visits USAID Water Supply Projects in Maldives
August 29, 2007. Ambassador of the United States of America to Maldives and Sri Lanka, Robert Blake, joined with Lhaviyani Atoll Chief Ahmed Moosa and local officials to preside over the groundbreaking of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Lhaviyani Atoll Community Water Supply Project on Hinnavaru and Naifaru islands. August 29, 2007. I really had four principal purposes this time around. First, was to support the 14 American exhibitors at the Hotel and Trade show. We are very proud of the good presence we had this year. The American Pavilion was a very strong showing and had a lot of very top flight American companies like General Electric. (more)

U.S. Embassy hosts an American Pavilion at the Maldives Trade Fair
The United States Embassy in Colombo hosted an American Pavilion at the Maldives Hotel & Trade Exhibition from August 28-30, 2007.
U.S. companies representing such diverse sectors as food & beverage, information technology, telecommunication, aviation, renewable energy, infrastructure, fitness equipment and consumer goods participated in the event, opened by U.S. Ambassador for Sri Lanka and Maldives, Robert Blake. (more)

August 28, 2007. The United States Embassy in Colombo inaugurated its new “Virtual Presence Post” at a reception in Male' on August 28, 2007, hosted by Ambassador Robert Blake.
A new tool of U.S. diplomacy in the 21st century, “virtual posts” are part of a comprehensive outreach and engagement strategy that promotes and facilitates interaction between the people of a foreign city or country and the people of the United States. (more)

Maldives National Day Celebrations
On July 25 U.S. Charge d’Affaires James Moore attended a reception in Male’ hosted by President and Mrs. Gayoom to mark the 42nd anniversary of Maldives independence.
The U.S. Embassy’s Acting Defense Attache Commander Donald Xiques also attended the reception. While in Male’, Mr. Moore met with then-Foreign Minister Ahmed Shaheed to review bilateral issues and with Commissioner of Elections Ibrahim Rashad to discuss plans for the August 18 referendum. (More)

Male', July 1, 2007. Eight journalists representing the major media outlets of Maldives participated in a three-day “News Reporting and Writing” course led by communications expert Merle Rubine.
The journalists came from public and private media sources, and from both electronic and print mediums and a range of political perspectives. (More)

USAID Assists Atoll Hospital to Deliver Messages on Good Health and Hygiene
Naifaru, July 1, 2007: The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) donated six television monitors to the Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital here to help disseminate health education and hygiene messages to waiting patients and their families to help improve the health of the Maldivian people. Lafayette Professor Draws over 200 to Lecture about Constitutionalism in Maldives
Male', June 25, 2007. It was standing-room-only at the Maldives’ Faculty of Education as Professor John Kincaid of Lafayette College discussed “Empowerment through Republican Constitutions.” In attendance were Maldivian academics, civil servants, non-governmental leaders, and high ranking government officials including the Maldivian Foreign Minister.
