    US Embassy Delivers English Books

    March 2, 2014: The United States Embassy, in partnership with the Maldivian Ministry of Education, delivered 983 books worth nearly $13,000 USD (201,000 Rufiyaa) to the Gnyaviyani Atoll Education Center in Fuvahmulah, Maldives today.

  • U.S. Embassy Launches Photography Contest to Mark Press Freedom Day

    April 28, 2014: The U.S. Embassy is conducting a photography contest from April 28-May 9 to mark World Press Freedom Day 2014. Themed ‘The Power of Media Freedom’ the contest is open to participants of all ages in Sri Lanka and Maldives to submit an original photograph depicting the theme. The Embassy will also launch its official Instagram page @USEmbSL in conjunction with the contest. Participants from Sri Lanka and Maldives must submit their Instagram and Twitter entries using hashtag #MediaFreedomSL and #MediaFreedomMaldives respectively to the Embassy’s Twitter handle or Instagram page: @USEmbSL. On May 21, a special panel of judges will pick winners for Sri Lanka and Maldives, awarding them with smartphones.

Since 1946, when Senator William Fulbright proposed this new program, we have seen almost seven decades of exchanges, including top scholars and students from all around the world. In total, more than 325,000 Fulbrighters, representing 155 countries, have participated in the Fulbright Program since its inception.

    January 23, 2014: The United States Embassy, along with the Maldivian Police Service, concluded a 12-day training program on “Vital Infrastructure Security” as part of the Diplomatic Security/Antiterrorism Assistance (ATA) Program in Male’ today. The program introduced Maldivian law enforcement and those responsible for high-risk infrastructure sites – sites such as banks, power plants, water purification centers, hospitals, ports of entry – to a systematic approach for securing these essential locations from terrorist attacks.

    October 29, 2013: This “Human Trafficking Awareness Raising Seminar” is part of a three-part awareness raising seminar with key stakeholders involved in combatting trafficking in persons in Maldives. In June, IOM began with a media seminar that has already seen positive results, I am told, by having raised the awareness of media personnel to treating the victims of trafficking as victims and not as criminals as they so often are.
