Welcome Message by Ambassador Robert Blake

Ambassador Blake
Welcome to our Virtual Presence Post (VPP).  The United States sees the establishment of this web site as an important step in the strengthening of ties between the U.S. and Maldives.  The VPP is a new diplomacy tool that enables the United States to have a presence in regions where there is no Embassy or Consulate physically located.  The Maldives VPP will enable us to utilize new communication technologies, along with our traditional outreach efforts, to deepen our engagement with the Maldivian people and the region.

The U.S. has growing interest in Maldives.

The U.S. role in advocating democratic reform remains a focal point of the U.S.-Maldivian relationship.  We urge the Government of Maldives to push forward on democratization and complete the transformation that was set out in the March 2006 “Reform Roadmap”.   The Embassy will continue to engage with all political parties to encourage constructive dialogue as Maldives moves toward its first multi-party parliamentary election in the coming weeks.  On the economic front, Maldives offers significant untapped potential for U.S. export and foreign investments.

As you explore this website, you will find not only the latest information on U.S. policies and U.S. – Maldivian relations, but also useful information on how you may apply for a U.S. visa, search for an American business partner, or choose among a multitude of educational institutions in the U.S.   Americans interested in this region will have access to updated information and useful links.  We also suggest that you visit the U.S. Embassy Colombo website and the recently updated Background Notes on the Maldives http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/5476.htm.

While we regret not being able to have a bilingual site incorporating both English and Dhivehi, we hope that this information is helpful to all those interested.  We propose that you bookmark our webpage and check regularly for upcoming programs and events.  We look forward to expanding our dialogue through this exciting medium of communication.
